Taxpayers React to Pension Plan WOWT
Health care costs, the mayor said, are a major contributor to the city's budget shortfall. They've tripled since 2000. "All cities are facing sky rocketing health care costs, just like Omaha,” Suttle said.
“The City of Omaha is self-insured,” he said. “This means health care claims are paid with Omaha taxpayer dollars… We must be innovative in finding real solutions to increase efficiency and to save taxpayer dollars.”
Ruth McIntire is a retiree, though not from the city. She thinks everyone should have to pay something toward health care. "I have a supplementary,” she said. “I pay $160 a month for my insurance besides what comes out of my social security."
Suttle’s proposal would have all city retirees with family plans paying 35% of their premiums. Singles plus one would pay 30% of premiums. Singles would pay 25%.
That sounds fair to Omahan Jeff Kneifl. "If they need to pay their own premiums, then they need to join the rest of the world and pay their own premiums," he said.
