"Nobody's going to lose the basic benefits they have under Medicare parts A and B. In fact, they're going to get more benefits," he says. "I think as far as seniors are concerned, they should make out pretty good on the whole health reform plan."But while the law gives seniors more free preventive care and helps many with drug costs, it could cause some upheaval for people in Medicare Advantage , privately run Medicare plans that send patients to their own networks of caregivers.
Those plans have made huge profits from the government for years. The health law will significantly cut their payments, which could spur many plans to increase monthly charges or cut services. That might have the biggest impact in Oregon, which in 2009 had 41 percent of Medicare beneficiaries enrolled in Advantage programs, the highest rate in the nation, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation .
